Prelim Evaluation

Final Prelim

Man Don't Care - JME

Past Student Videos

Alleyways - Fast in My Car

38/40 - Level 4
  • Light problems with the fire.
  • Shooting material is appropriate for the genre and viewer.
  • Fairy lights worked well - little attentions to detail to perfect each shot.
  • The transition from black and white to colour was clever.
  • Ellie looks like a natural performer and looks like its her song.

Cold Hands

27/40 - Level 3
  • The editing clearly represented the style and genre of the song
  • The costumes also clearly displayed the realistic narrative
  • I believe the style that they chose, would not have as many fast paced cuts as what was put in.
  • The location variety meant that it was exciting and interesting for the audience to watch, keeping them hooked and interested.

The Growlers - Dull Boy

35/40 - Level 4

  • This video is very clever at the beginning with all the different colours
  • Has a strong narrative
  • Loads of different locations
  • Strong editing The lip syncing is weak in some points

Music Video Ideas

OUR CHOICE: After presenting our song choices and explaining our video ideas thoroughly to the class, the majority of our class preferred the choice of Halsey - Hold Me Down as opposed to any of the other ideas. Therefore, Hold Me Down is our final decision for our music video soundtrack. We will, however, use the ideas from the other soundtrack choices and incorporate them into our final product.

Evaluation - Question 5

When planning, shooting and editing we had to take a variety of factors into account. We had to ensure that we thoroughly planned everything, which lead to us knowing exactly what we were doing and when. This left us comfortable and satisfied with the amount of work we had due and timings. When planning we had ensure that the shooting schedule was completed with detail and the correct  information of timings and shots that we needed. This means that when we film we will be able to complete them to a good standard. The main intention for our group was to make sure that the shots matched up as much as possible to the video. We had to make sure that the effects, cuts and transitions were as identical as possible. We needed to make sure that the shooting locations were available at the times we were able to film. This meant the group had to book locations in advance and it allowed us to stay on top of the schedule and we kept up to date with our work. As a group we was organised and precise.

Props for Prelim

after deciding we are going to perform the recreation of the Man Don't Care as our prelim task I collected all the props for the selected time use. We have a ski mask because I have one at home, I'm borrowing a snap back off of Charlie weeks, Evan said he had a wand we could borrow for the video, We were going to borrow a basic school laptop, we will use one of the group members IPhone, our teacher has black and white handkerchief in her prop box, I will borrow one of my school mates car keys, our teacher also said she would bring in alphabet squares and we need a big group of people to come in wearing black.

Story Board for Prelim

This is our story board for "Man Don't Care". Most of the shots within the video are mid shots or close ups. Most of the transitions within the video are also basic cuts except for one wipe down which will be easy to do on adobe premiere. I also need to find out how to do cloning on adobe premiere because that is featured in the video and I also need to figure out how to do a fire effect because it will be too dangerous to actually set fire to a microphone.

Reflection on the story board
I thought the storyboard was helpful when it came to breaking down the video shot by shot. This helped us get the correct shots and it also made us more organised. But we didn't really use the story board much. We thought it was more useful to use the music video its self to recreate the video. This was because the storyboard was scruffy and complicated to understand. But we did manage to stick to our storyboard.

Features of a Music Video

Although music videos often have very unique narratives, there are still some unspoken 'rules' that all music video directors follow in order to advertise the music successfully. These are:

  • Lyrics - how are they portrayed in the video? Do they match the visuals or not?
  • Unusual Locations
  • Dancing/movement/choreography
  • Quick cuts/Multiple cuts and transitions
  • Repeated Locations
  • Artists lip syncing
  • How the Mise en Scene is styled to fit the genre
There are three main music video types and each video can possess either just one or multiple of the following:
  • Performance
  • Narrative
  • Concept

Audience - How do you consume music?

When do you consume music? I consume music all throughout the day, from as soon as I wake up to just before I fall asleep. My favourite times to listen to music is whilst working, on the way to school and in bed.

Where do you consume music?

I often consume music in the my bedroom to wake me up. I always consume music in the car as well, as this is often in my routine for school. This is often in my car radio.

Who with?

If I am in the car, I will listen to music with my parents, or my own or with my friends. However, if I am listening to music on my phone, I will be listening to that on my own, as I see it is a way of escaping and having my own personal time.

How?

I listen to music via my phone, from Apple Music.  I find that this is a great way of listening to music as it is easily accessible, on the go and affordable. This allows me to access a variety of music, at a very low cost.

Music Timeline

St. Louis Blues 1929's
This was the first music video ever made and from watching it we can how basic the camera work is and how the graphics are not up to todays modern standards. There is very little emphasis on working the camera as it seems to just be like a little sketch from a tv show with music played over the top particularly at the . There are not many cuts compared to todays videos.

Elvis Presely- Burning Love - 1970's
From this video we can see how far the music videos have come in the years between St. Louis Blues and this song. Its much more camera orientated and his very conscious about the camera being there and he keeps looking at it almost selling himself through the lens. There are many more locations used and there is also a lot more shots/cuts/ costumes included in the video.

Rod Steward-  Baby Jane- 1980's
This is the first video out of the ones so far that has included special effects, there are different shots, costumes, paces, locations and emotions portrayed throughout the song and this really sets the scene for music videos from this point.

R Kelly - Ignition Remix - 2000's
This is the first video in this list from the 20th century, we can see major changes in the way woman are shown, in this video we can see that they are now shown as more of a sex symbol performing sexual dance moves. This idea of woman being portrayed as nothing more than sex is still in use today and many music videos will show this.

Rita Ora and Chris Brown- Body On Me -2010's
From this video we can clearly see that much like the previous video the woman are show and used for sexual purposes. This is a very heated video between Rita Ora and Chris Brown. The whole video is centred around them getting with each other. This is a huge jump from the St. Louis Blues that are in the first video. Thats not the only difference between the two, the video is a lot shorter, its also a lot more camera focused, for example they make noticeable actions just for the camera. If they are in a room by themselves (which doesn't really happen in the first one) they are staring down the camera lens. Another difference between the two music videos is clearly the technology, there has been a huge improvement in technology between 1929 and today. This just makes the music videos better and better.
