Features of a Music Video

Although music videos often have very unique narratives, there are still some unspoken 'rules' that all music video directors follow in order to advertise the music successfully. These are:

  • Lyrics - how are they portrayed in the video? Do they match the visuals or not?
  • Unusual Locations
  • Dancing/movement/choreography
  • Quick cuts/Multiple cuts and transitions
  • Repeated Locations
  • Artists lip syncing
  • How the Mise en Scene is styled to fit the genre
There are three main music video types and each video can possess either just one or multiple of the following:
  • Performance
  • Narrative
  • Concept
